Entsiegelung
bun-joer02

Heavy Rain Kit
HeavyRainKit
17 January 2019 - 4:7 PM As a consequence of climate change, heavy rain and floods become more frequent in many places of the world. This contains different risks for the townspeople, especially in Leicester City. This is our challenge: Although there is a lot of information about how to prevent damages of heavy rain and floods, most people are unaware of the importance and the potential of specific options to prevent heavy rain damages. Therefore, we want to help people to feel responsible and empower them to engage in climate adaption and prevention action. This is how the idea for the HEAVY RAIN KIT rose. Please see the attached document for further information.

Designing an innovative sustainable solution for Leicester city to prevent surface water flooding
obaid
01 December 2018 - 7:23 PM This project is about designing an innovative sustainable solution for Leicester city to prevent surface water flooding. However, in this project will be about sustainable drainage systems (SuDS), There are several benefits such as reduce flooding, save environment by reducing water pollution and helps avoid congestion of cars which may cause by flooding…etc. Moreover, surface water flooding is caused when the volume of rainwater falling does not drain away through the existing drainage systems or soak into the ground. This project will focus on permeable surfaces and sewer openings, paddling platforms use a series of layers based on intercepting and managing rainwater. On the surface, and in the form of individual paving units such as concrete blocks (the size of concrete blocks will be smaller blocks) to allow water to pass between them to the basic treatment layer. The treatment layer consists of a pebble bedding material which removes contaminants from the water as they pass into the final storage layer. The storage layer is constructed from crushed stone. Water is stored in the spaces between the stones. In this infiltration point in the ground should be encouraged before discharge-controlled, via perforated tubes or drain fins, in the next stage of the drainage system. For sewer openings will be small slots because if some one throw cigarette, paper or rubbish it will stuck in this stage and make service every week to take all the rubbish in this slots.

Hot spot flood risk community communication App
tomiko
28 November 2018 - 2:51 PM This app aims to be a communication tool for a neighbourhood or community in a hot spot flood risk area. The purpose is to raise awareness that they are living in a risk area and prepare them for flooding through digital information about flood warnings, having an interactive checklist of things to take in case of flooding ("tick it if you have packed it"), instructions and maps about shelters and escape routes in the hot spot area into safe places, and communicate online with your neighbours. In addition, as part of the initiative, there will be flood drills events (once or twice a year) where neighbours can meet and simulate a flood escape using the features of the app. At the end of the flood drill, the community can celebrate a successful flood risk event!

RotH2O: a roundabout for rainwater harvesting and reuse
Silvia Cocuccioni
23 November 2018 - 5:47 PM RotH2O is a special roundabout that exploits the underground unused space of the roundabout to harvest rainwater, consequently preventing road flooding caused by extreme precipitation events. Thanks to a water tank placed under the normal roundabout, water is collected and can be reused depending on the neighbourhood needs (i.e. landscaping, cleaning the road, extinguishing fires, groundwater recharge). The aboveground portion of the roundabout is covered by vegetation that will help in preventing the urban heat island effect, reducing pollution and creating a small urban biodiversity hotspot.

The Green App
irichek
02 November 2018 - 3:52 PM The application represents an individual digital diary on personal eco-friendly behaviour. Every user is thus being driven for example to take more often the bicycle, recycle or participate in social cleaning campaigns through gaining bonus points for that. The big award for the most active users is getting a personal tree or even planting it by himself/herself in the local park. This could not only contribute to the developement of a mutual green area but also have even bigger positive consequences. The reforestation is an appropriate way of absorbing water as well as an example of natural water drainage. Moreover, the planting of trees can reduce or even prevent from potential flooding in the future.
